Who Built The Eiffel Tower?

It was designed and built by Alexandre Gustav Eiffel.The original design of the Eiffel Tower was proposed by Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier, two senior engineers who worked for "the Compagnie des Établissements Eiffel" which was the company of Gustav Eiffel. Initially He was not interested in the project, but sent the engineers to the head of the company's architectural department, Stephen Sauvestre.  Sauvestre made some  edits, Eiffel got behind the final plans and bought the right to the patent

Why was Eiffel Tower built?

It build to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the French Revolution and to be the entrance and beacon of the 1889 World's Fair in Paris.

When was the Eiffel tower built?

Construction work on the foundations of  Eiffel tower started on 28 January 1887.It took two years, two months and five days to construct it.The main structural work was completed at the end of March 1889 and on the 31st March 1889 it was open to public.


Height of Eiffel Tower

 Though the official height of the Tower is 301m.This is slightly shorter than the Statue of Liberty in New York City. It is an iron lattice tower hence it is height changes by season and weather due to expand or shrink of metal depending on the weather, the Tower’s height can vary by up to 15 cm.

The Eiffel Tower History and Purpose 

  • The tower was supposed to be turn down after 20 years, its completion, in 1909 its use in the World Fair.However
  • During World War I, the French used the Tower as radio station to intercept enemy messages from Berlin. In fact in 1917, the legendary spy Mata Hari was caught because of a message between Germany and Spain that was intercepted from here. 
  • For years, the tower has been used for crazy daredevil stunts — from parachutes to bungee cords. In 1912, French tailor Franz Reichelt attempted to fly from the first floor with a spring-loaded parachute suit, but crashed 187 ft to the ground instead.
  • Speaking of artwork, from 1925 to 1935, the Tower was used as a billboard for the French auto firm CITROEN — with the name spelled out in illuminated letters vertically on the Tower. No other brand has ever been given the opportunity since then.

    The tower has two restaurants: Le 58 tour Eiffel, on the first floors and the Le Jules Verne, a gourmet restaurant on the second floor, with a private lift. This restaurant has one star in the Michelin Red Guide. It is run by the multi-Michelin star chef Alain Ducasse and owes its name to the famous science-fiction writer Jules Verne.

    • The Eiffel Tower has 20,000 light bulbs that sparkle for 5 minutes on the hour, every hour, from nightfall to 1am. 
    • Though it is most photographed monument in the world it’s illegal to photograph tower at night since it’s considered an artwork. 
    • The Eiffel Tower is repainted every 7 years.It required 60 tonnes of paint. And each time it takes 25 painters around 18 months to repaint.The tower is not painted one uniform color. It is painted darker at the top and becomes gradually lighter towards the bottom.
    • For four decades it was the world’s tallest structure until 1930 when New York City's Chrysler Building build up to 1,046 feet.
    • It has 1,710 steps to reach the top.
    • There are 72 names engraved on the tower, on different sides.  They are the mathematicians and engineers who contributed to the design/construction.
